Children's books, collages and other stuff....

1. Charley Harper illustration - Cardinal
2. Freshly Cracked Pepper, ATC - VBR
3. Feathers for Lunch (in Spanish) - Lois Ehlert

I am a collector of children's books. I have a few authors/illustrators that are particular favorites. I adore Barbara Cooney's work - to me, the perfect gift for new parents is a set of books - Island Boy, Miss Rumphius and Hattie and the Wild Waves. If everyone raised their children with these three stories in mind we would have a wonderful world. Chris VanAllsburg - well, his work is just beyond description. I don't think anyone can read The Polar Express and not wish to still be able to hear the tinkling of that little silver bell. When it comes to collage art in children's books, I know that Eric Carle is a favorite of many. Brown bear, brown bear.... and the Very Hungry Caterpillar hold a special place in our hearts. Caterpillar was one of my daughter's favorite books as a small child. She gives this book to anyone who has a baby. (This is obviously a book house!) But! For me, Lois Ehlert is, handsdown, my favorite collage artist. Feathers for Lunch, Eating the Alphabet, Snowballs...the list goes on and one. I love Ehlert's work, the bright colors, the clean simplicity of the lines. Wonderful! I recently made a little ATC of vegetables titled Freshly Cracked Pepper, which was a little homage to Lois Ehlert's work.

While at the bookstore I noticed that the collage artist Charley Harper has several gorgeous calendars out for the 2010 season. If you have ever received a ATC or postcard trade from me, chances are you may have gotten it in one of Charley Harper's bird notecards. I love his work. The lines are crisp and clean, the colors wonderful and there is a whimsical quality to his work that tickles me! You can check out Harper's work at his link - http://www.charleyharperprints.com/

  2. Oh my Verna....we DO have a lot in common. I collect children's books as well....I have well over a thousand. LOVE them and still read them. When my kids were little I read to them every day and it was SO special. Now I'm just waiting on grandbabies, LOL. The illustrations in some are so wonderful! :)
